So I asked the promo group that put on the show this weekend if anyone else was selling bows before I agreed to commit (I didn't want to be one of 5 other bow makers). They said I was the only one, but someone did sells bows but they were on flip flops. So I agreed.

Well the other stand there were the owners of a business called "Lollitops." Anyone heard of them? They originate in St. Louis, MO (my area), but they sell all over the place. They don't put bows on flip flops at all they sell the kufi hats but promote them as "a hat that turns into a purse." Well I sell the hats too, along with probably 10,000 other online boutique and stores just NOT with lollitops idea behind them (they have a patent on them so you can NOT copy their work in case you get any ideas). Well we were not close to each other at the show, but within walking distance. They sell their hats for $30 each (different prices in different locations) and I was selling mine plain for $10 and then the flowers for $5 each and the ribbon band for $1 each, more like create your own. The promo guy came by my booth and notified me of the similar items and just asked that I not discount mine or make a big competition out of it and I am in no way going to do that. They are trying to make a living too. Well it was kind of funny to see people come by my stand and tell me I wasn't charging enough, or that mine were the same thing but so much cheaper... on and on. I didn't say one bad thing to them about the high cost of the other booths products and if people asked me if I was "lollitops" I told them "no, but they were here with a stand too."

I just want to know what you guys think about this whole thing? What would you do? Their whole idea is a hat/purse; however, it's not their idea to sell these hats with ribbon and flowers attached (which is still all it is, just extra long ribbon hanging off to the side). I even had one lady walk off and I over heard her say "they copied off lollitops!" That was the worst, knowing that I did not. It's just been bugging me. The promo guy was in charge of viewing our sites before accecpting us and he was nice about the whole thing and said other promo groups would have probably made me take down my hats which was a big seller for me and would have hurt my sales. So what are your thoughts?

I just recently heard of Lollitops (I saw them in an issue of Baby Talk magazine a couple of weeks ago) and thought how cool that they have that kind of marketing exposure. It took me a minute to figure out that the kufis they had listed were the "hat/purses" they were talking about, though, lol. While that is a novel idea to me, the idea of an embellished kufi, like you said, is not. If those are big sellers for you then I would not think twice about selling them. I know how you must have felt when the lady "accused you" of copying. The only reason she believes that is because she saw/heard of Lollitops first. Try not to feel bad... we all know the truth! Hugs to you.

Thanks Barbara! I hope that if we end up at another show together, which is a good possibilty, that they don't get mad at me. They did sell their hats well, I saw a few kids walking around with them on and they are cute and a little different. But I think I have the right to sell them and market them in a different way.

On another note, I have a lot of comeption out here! I'm sure you have heard of Sweet Baby Boutique, well the owner lives in the town over from me (less then 10 miles away). She doesn't do shows that I've seen, but she has her bows and clips in a ton of stores internationally. I think I need to step up my game! Ha!!

I'm glad I don't live in your neck of the woods... I would be on nerve pills for sure!

You keep doing what you are doing, before long a new store will be trying to keep up with Crossin My Heart Creations!!!!

Here is my question: why would you want to put a purse back on your head? I guess maybe I could be the exception, but the bottom of my purse gets disgusting, and I have to clean it all the time. I wouldn't want to put it on my head!

I just read that purses have 70 times more bacteria/viruses than a toliet seat, because you set them down on tables, bathroom floors, lockers, etc. Girls with purses don't really have anything to actually carry, probably candy or coins, I imagine that they would get filthy.

Keep doing your thing, I am sure that you will do fine!

Oh my goodness, I never thought of that! I've heard the same thing. You are right, if my daughter used the hat as a purse I'd never let her put it back on her head before washing it first. I'm sure they sell a ton of them, but don't mention that part of it, LoL! I think mine are doing just fine selling as just hats, down to the point, plain and simple.

Barbara - It does kind of make me worry a lot about doing shows if people selling the same thing as me are going to be there. I always try to find out first, but if they book after me then I don't know till the show rolls around. There's always competition out there, I just try and do it for fun and try to make money at the same time. Try not to get too wrapped up in it. But I would be lying if I said I didn't think about it.
