I thought I already posted this, but can't seem to find it. So if I post this twice - SORRY!

I love the organza flowers I've been seeing everywhere, so I thought I'd try them out.

The first photo is a set of three flowers which where my 1st flowers. I just wanted to try different ways for cutting the fabric and sewing different centers on, just kind of experimenting. I attached them to bobby pins.

The necklace I found a tutorial for awhile back and wanted to make it for my sister for Christmas. I think mine came out okay. Here's the tutorial if anyone else wants to make one:
http://infarrantlycreative.blogspot.com/2009/11/how-to-make-bonheur-necklace.html

The last photo of the black flower I also made for my sister for Christmas. She likes this kind of stuff so I tried to make it more in her style. I added a little maraboa to the back. I also added tulle to this flower behind the organza (directions from the necklace tutorial), which I like a lot better then the 1st flowers I made.

I would like to make a headband with feathers and a few flowers for my sister as well, but I need to find the thin metal headbands for that. Not the plastic ones.

I actually had the beads on hand so I made the necklace, but I never thought to add the flowers to a pre-made necklace! That's a great idea! It would go a lot quicker that way too. I'm not much of a jewelry maker, but it seemed simple enough.

Very beautiful! I love that necklace, thanks for sharing the link. I'm gonna try and make one for myself one day.

I have a question about fabric, I don't buy fabric but I bought something that looks like tulle from Walmart, does walmart sell tulle or is that organza fabric that I bought? I didn't ask the lady that cut it for me.

Walmart does sell tulle on a bolt like fabric comes. That's probably what you bought. Organza is more of a sheer, shimmer, stiff type material that also comes on a bolt. The organza is what is the top part of the flowers, some of them have the tulle layered behind them.

It did come off a bolt and it is shimmer but not sheer and stiff. Thanks, I was wondering what the difference was between the two.

walmart sells tulle but not organza or silk. I have made the best flowers using 100%polyester from curtains that i bought for my dd and we ended up changing her color scheme for her room and never used them. They are the prettiest shade of purple. So check around you may have something you aren't aware of or check the clearance curtain section. I have made a bunch of flowers and i am not even half way through this curtain panel and i have 2 more panels.

So you guys wont believe this, but my sister was over the other day showing me her new cell phone and the pics she had taken with it. In one of the pictures she was wearing the EXACT necklace I made her!! WHITE EVEN! First I thought, crap. Second I thought, boy do I know my sister! So now I'm thinking of making her this exact same necklace in black... what doesn't this girl have!?!

So these gifts went off great with my little sis! She went out to a Christmas party Christmas Day and actually wore the headband. She did say she had the necklace already, but got it in gray - so she was glad I made it in white!

As a beginner with these, do I use the circle cutter or print out the flower template or is it just a personal preferance? I went to Joanns and got some fabric to use. I never would have thought to use tulle as one would not think it would singe very well. I was gonna try with an old silk dress I had in the closet, but afraid it would catch on fire after reading other posts on other groups

Do NOT get picky with the shapes of your cut shapes before you singe them. Circles aren't prefect anyway afterwards, and if you want to do more petals just wing it. Really it doesn't make too much of a differance.

The tulle SMELLS when you singe it, but it looks nice. I don't know about the silk, would be too afraid it would catch fire.

I'm glad your sister liked the headband and necklace, they are so pretty. I've made some flowers out of organza and silky type material, but I haven't tried tulle, I'm going to try it as soon as I get the chance.

How many layers do you do? I have read 10 at least. I got some solid fabric and some sheer to layer it. Thought it would be pretty

I think for bigger flowers maybe 10 layers. I think mine were more like 5 plus the tulle which I belive was 2.

Why can't you get them to work?? They pretty well curl up on their own. Maybe you are trying to be too perfect with them?? They are better when you just let them do what they are going to do and throw them on top of each other. Give it another try!

OK, I think I am hooked. Although these are very time consuming, once they are cut out and singed, they go together really well. Still not sure if mine are right or not, or even if there is a right way or wrong way, but I have done 3 so far and singing more tonight. I figure if I cut all of my circles, and then since, then I can pick and choose which ones go together. Not even sure how many beads to put in the centers.
Trying to figure out how to upload a couple of pictures

Those are cute! Are you using like a silk? They look very silky. This post reminded me I bought new organza fabric in different colors I wanted to make more of these with. Guess you guys know what I'll be busy doing today (since it's only 1 degree outside, I'm STAYING HOME today!)

Honestly I am not 100% sure what it is. LOL I looked at the bolts of fabric in the formal wear and grabbed polyster is all I know. You can wash in cold water and I know silk you have to dry clean. So I am on the right track then? Do I need to add more beads or more layers? The green have 10 I think, the blue has maybe 8. Once I finish these all up, I have 3 more colors, I onlt got 1/4 of a yard of each color, I want to go back to JOanns and see if they have any organza to play with. I have some old sil mens scarves here and I tried with that but it went poof too quickly for me. So needless to say I will not be using that for these. HA HA HA

Thanks. I guess it depends on how you cut them out. I am using a circle cutter for most of mine and then free handing the smaller pieces. Only because I waste not want not as they say. That I think is the longest part of doing them. The singing goes pretty quickly. I do each step till I am out of fabric and then move to the next step.

They really don't take that much time. I hand cut out all my circles. I layer the organza to make 6 layers and cut a free hand circle. I adjust a couple down to smaller cirlce to top the flower, but I've only been doing like 6 layers. Bigger flowers probably need more. Mine are probably 3.5" wide?? However, BE CAREFUL! I burnt my finger pretty bad tonight making some. The heat from the flame moves so much that if you aren't carefull it'll get you.

beansnana
01-09-2010, 11:10 PM
Thanks, to me, the hardest part is cutting out the cirlce shapes. I am using a circle cutter and then cutting freehand for the smaller ones. I do up all of my fabric and then singe them. That goes pretty quickly. HTH

I was in a craft store yesterday and in the 'bridal' aisle they had a bag of "flower petals" .. has anyone ever used something like that to make flowers!?!?! I was thinking .. 'they are all cut' and you'd just have to assemble them!?!? Just curious.

I'd never thought to do that, but I don't see why you couldn't! I was at Walmart today and they had boxes of rose petals in the Valentine's Day stuff. Not sure why since it all wasn't even out yet, but they were already clearanced out to $.25 for a box down from $2.00?? It's worth a shot at that price.
