I decided to try my hand at making bottle cap necklaces. I can't seem to get the dang rubber seal out of them. I have tried everything I have read: hot plate, coffee pot warmer, boiling them, blow dryer, heating in the oven... I STILL can't get the completely out (without sanding them and that takes TOO long). Anybody else have any suggestions or tips? I have these cute images (http://poshnpretty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=490)that Chrissie was so nice to share and I wanna play!

Mine either comes up in patches leaving behind a thin layer or turns to goo. I have tried less heat, shorter periods of time and it doesn't work.

Heat the oven up to 350 (170, I think), put the caps on a baking sheet, and heat for 5 mins to start.

You will need a couple pairs of tweezers.

Hold the cap with one pair, and pull up the ring with the other.

If the ring doesn't come off all the way, pop in the oven again and repeat.

I TOTALLY HEAR YOU!! I have the same problem...I dunno if its the kind of bottlecaps I get or what but I Cannot get those little suckers out either...I haven't (*knock on wood) had any problems with them coming off with the liner in yet but I hope I never do. I may have to change my brand of bottlecaps. I even have started looking into the flattened bottlecaps and I like those ALOT!

I tried the oven too and it didn't work. I will give it another shot. Do you have the air heat oven?

I agree, it sounds like this is bottle cap "brand" related. I have a few used caps that I have been practicing removing the liners on and I can definitely tell a difference between caps although I haven't had success with a complete removal from any of them.

I'm not sure. There is an element on the top and a big fan in the back? I'm guessing it is air heat.

What brand caps are you using? Mine are from Williams Brewing.

I got mine (new ones) from Christian Herkommer (for home and hobby brewers) Hopfen und mehr - Bier selber brauen - Versand für Hobbybrauer (http://www.hopfen-und-mehr.de/)

The used ones I bought on ebay.de (over 1000 for €1) so I have plenty to play around with.

Ah, ok :) Do you think nail polish remover might help you get rid of the last of whatever is remaining on the caps?

Hmmmmmmmmmmm, that is worth trying! I'll have to dig around and find some polish remover. My claws haven't been polished in ages. I'll let you know how it turns out when I try it again.
